Algal Blooms in the South of Chile Detected from MERIS - Present impact on human health.
C. Rodriguez-Benito and Christian Haag, Mariscope Chilena. Puerto Montt. Chile Since the last December 2003 high concentrations of phytoplankton has been measured from in situ water samples and on-line underwater fluorometer in the region of study and remote sensed data (Fig. 2).The objectives of this report are:
1st: to inform that the first goal of this project has been archived, which was to demonstrate the usefulness of this remote sensing technology (Rodriguez et al., 2003).
2nd: to inform that the 2nd goal of the project should be obtained in the following two months through the remote monitoring of this phytoplankton blooms, which has already strongly affected human health and impacted the fish farming industry and could have very important effects on the economy of this region of Chile, the world leader in salmon fish production.
